Oconee River

EVENT DETAILS: Athens and the Oconee River is our destination on this adventure. This 11-mile paddle takes us to historic Barnett Shoals and Scull Shoals to explore historic ruins of old mill villages. We’ll begin our adventure by dropping our boats at historic Barnett Shoals Dam, take a tour of the ruins of the mill village that was once powered by the dam, and then drive our vehicles to our take out site in the Oconee National Forest. From there we will shuttle back to Barnett Shoals to begin our paddle. Along the paddle route, we’ll stop to see the the ghost town of Scull Shoals, a 19th century mill village where ruins of the mill buildings remain.


Registration Fees: $60 ADULTS/$30 17 & UNDER TBD.

Registration fees include shuttle service, river map/guide, liability insurance fees, on-river guide and sag vehicle.

Event Hours: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Paddling: The paddle route is Class I–mostly flatwater. It is suitable for novice paddlers. The 10.8-mile route will take between 4 and 6 hours to complete.

Boat Rentals: Need a boat? We’ve got ’em. Tandem sit in kayaks and solo sit on top kayaks are available. You can reserve your boat when you register.

COVID-19 Protocols: All participants must follow social-distancing guidelines. This includes wearing face coverings during shuttles, at the launch site, at the take out site and other locations during the event in which appropriate social distancing is not possible. Not share equipment, food, water and other supplies.

Maintain social distancing of 6 feet at all times when not wearing face coverings.

Maintain strict hygiene by washing or disinfecting hands frequently; do not touch eyes, nose, mouth with unwashed hands.

Finally, do not participate if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or you are feeling ill. Full refunds will be provided.
